Unfortunately, the menu's charming platformer can be frustratingly irregular, leaving players to depend on unreliable pixels that determine their survival in the minigames. Accompanied by pleasantly adorable side-scrolling adventures, Nightmare Reaper makes the gaming industry's most mundane features (like skill trees, playstyles, and inventory) enjoyable and nostalgic. While the levels become more challenging as time progresses, players can also become more powerful by leveling up in the menu.
One of Nightmare Reaper's greatest strengths is its gunplay, accurately reflecting damage with satisfying visuals and sound effects. Players can find weapons ranging from basic shotguns to flame-throwing bazookas, but players are only permitted to keep one weapon after each level, and the rest convert to gold. Weapons are ranked from Common to Legendary, depending on the attachments and attributes available on the gun. Other opportunities to harvest additional treasures, money, and weapons appear in chests scattered throughout the level.
